From Optical Zoom to Hybrid Zoom: How Ocular Zoom 2.0 Upgrades the Thermal Riflescope Experience

For hunters choosing a thermal scope, magnification is often one of the first specifications they notice. But on a modern thermal riflescope, zoom is about much more than making the target appear larger.

Traditional digital zoom enlarges an image that has already been captured by the thermal sensor. As magnification increases, the existing pixels are enlarged as well, making pixelation and loss of visible detail more noticeable.

This was one of the reasons Nocpix ACE originally introduced Ocular Zoom: to bring optical magnification into the eyepiece and create a viewing experience closer to the familiar feel of a traditional daylight riflescope.

With the new ACE 2 Series, that concept evolves again. Ocular Zoom 2.0 combines optical and electronic magnification into a coordinated Hybrid Zoom system designed to make high-magnification observation clearer, more complete, and more natural.

From Digital Zoom to Ocular Zoom: Why Optical Magnification Matters

Digital zoom works by enlarging part of the existing thermal image. It is convenient and effective, but as magnification increases, the available image information is spread across more display pixels.

The original Nocpix ACE thermal riflescope approached zoom differently.

Its first-generation Ocular Zoom uses an optical lens system inside the eyepiece to magnify the displayed image. Compared with electronic-only zoom, this approach helps reduce visible pixelation and blur while retaining more of the detail already present in the thermal image. It also provides a zooming operation and viewing experience closer to a traditional daylight scope.

For thermal hunting, this matters because magnification is often used not simply to detect a heat source, but to better observe and identify details before making a decision.

Why Optical Ocular Zoom Alone Wasn’t Enough

The first generation of Ocular Zoom improved the high-magnification experience, but optical eyepiece magnification also introduced two practical limitations.

First, as the eyepiece optically magnified the display, the visible portion of the screen became smaller. Some UI information positioned toward the edges of the display could therefore move outside the user’s visible area.

Second, the reticle was magnified together with the image. At higher optical magnification, it could appear thicker, which was less ideal for hunters looking for finer aiming references at longer distances.

This created a new challenge for the next generation of the Nocpix riflescope:

How do you keep the benefits of optical zoom while allowing the image, UI, and reticle to adapt together?

That question led to Ocular Zoom 2.0.

Ocular Zoom 2.0: From Optical Zoom to Hybrid Zoom

This is the core evolution of Ocular Zoom 2.0 on the ACE 2 Series.

Instead of relying on optical eyepiece magnification alone, ACE 2 combines optical eyepiece magnification with electronic magnification, creating a coordinated Hybrid Zoom system.

As the user zooms in, optical and electronic magnification work together, while the UI adjusts accordingly so that important on-screen information remains fully visible throughout the zoom process.

The reticle is also adapted to work with electronic magnification, helping it remain finer at higher magnifications instead of becoming noticeably thicker, as it could with the optical-only zoom system on the first-generation ACE.

So the real upgrade of Ocular Zoom 2.0 is not simply a higher magnification range.

It improves the entire zooming experience:

  • the target becomes larger;
  • useful image detail is retained as much as possible;
  • the UI remains fully visible;
  • the reticle stays fine for more precise aiming.

For real night hunting, this means hunters no longer need to choose between higher magnification and complete on-screen information. Instead, they get a smoother, more natural, and more integrated viewing experience.

Beyond Zoom: A More Forgiving Eyepiece

Ocular Zoom 2.0 is not only a software and magnification upgrade. The physical viewing system has also changed.

The original ACE uses a 50mm eye relief and an 8mm exit pupil. On ACE 2, these increase to 60mm eye relief and a 10mm exit pupil.

The longer eye relief gives the hunter more room behind the eyepiece, while the larger exit pupil creates a more forgiving viewing position.

That becomes important in real hunting situations, where shooting posture can change quickly and the hunter may need to acquire the image without spending extra time finding the exact eye position.

For anyone evaluating a thermal riflescope, night hunting scope, or even comparing different optical concepts with a night vision scope, viewing comfort matters just as much as the magnification number itself.

It’s Not Just How Much You Can Zoom — It’s What Remains Useful

Maximum magnification is easy to put on a specification sheet.

But for a professional thermal hunting optic, the more useful questions come afterward:

How much detail remains visible after magnification?

Can the hunter still see important UI information?

Does the reticle remain suitable for precise aiming?

Can the eye acquire a full image quickly and naturally?
